Make Your Own Dinner Set | AUG 6 - SEPT 3
6 WEEK COURSE
AUGUST 6 - SEPTEMBER 3 (+ 1 week TBC)
Thursday 6:00pm - 8:30pm
There are few things more satisfying than eating from a plate or bowl made by your own hand. This course provides a unique opportunity to fill your cupboards and tables with beautiful, handcrafted dinnerware.
The hidden extras? This course provides the invaluable experience of crafting something significant with your own hands, while learning a humbling craft that has been used by humans for millennia. The act of making something from earth itself also contains in itself very grounding qualities and just feels good for the soul. You will find yourself leave the studio sessions feeling refreshed and lighter than when you entered. Learn a new skill, share the making experience in a peaceful atelier, and be surrounded by likeminded creatives.
The course consists of 5 weeks of construction time followed by an additional glazing session.
Over the 5 weeks of building with clay you can expect to make:
4 x dinner plates
4 x side plates
4 x bowls
1 large serving platter.
Given time, extras may include small serving trays or dishes, salad servers, extra’s in your dinner set.
The + 1 extra week?
There is an additional glazing session included in the course fees so you can learn the art of glaze application and colour selection. Glazing is often where you put your own stamp on your work, so it is an important part of the process and one that really makes the works YOURS as the maker.
Do I need experience with clay:
No. You can come at this as a complete beginner. I’ve designed the course so that success is inevitable!
What to expect:
The main building techniques used for construction of a hand-built dinner set are slab and mold methods. A lot of the process involves a rolling pin, and mold pressing! Yet another added bonus, it’s a great workout for your arms!
You will also get the choice of 3 different clays: a rustic, stone coloured clay, a finer, sandstone coloured clay, and a fine white clay.
The final stage of the process is to glaze your work. You will select and test glaze colours early in the course. After your set has been fully dried and bisque fired, you will return to the studio for a final glazing session (included in the course fees). We will arrange this date as a group and will aim for approximately 4 weeks after your final making session. If you are unable to make this session, you can commission me to glaze your set for an additional fee of $150.
Glaze firing of your set is the longest part of the process - finished sets will be available for collection approximately 2 months from the final session.
Your bespoke dinner set will be available for collection approx. 6 weeks after glaze day.
COURSE INCLUDES:
All materials, including glaze
Use of all tools and required equipment
3 clay options
All firing
Small class sizes
Experienced and professional tuition
Tea & water
